NOTE
When I design sets, I want to shape the space in a way that, as we watch, keeps us aware that we are in a special place, created or shaped for this performance. I like audience to be aware of each other’s presence. If its the best way to tell a story, I like realism, including a great box set of a room, because in the right project, it achieves the theatrical space for performance best. But I seek a theatrical space, and love when a text is married to a fluid space that can serve multiple purposes. I like to move action forward, keep the focus on action and text, and keep the audience connected to each other and the actors.
I’ve tried to organize each gallery of designs on this page, and on the page named ‘collections’ in a way that will give you a sense of range and puts the work I most want you to see first, while saving a few gems for you if you scroll all the way through. I’ve worked for a long time as a resident designer, with a varied portfolio because of that. If you want to look at a specific kind of design, use the collections page or navigate directly to a collection of, for example, multi-set designs. Looking at those groupings should also give you an idea of how I think of these kinds of sets, and there is a bit more writing about design with each group gallery.
